To whom and how to tip at the hotel

One of the questions we ask when we come on vacation and check into a hotel is who to tip when and how much.

The answer to this question is simple.

Firstly, there is often an unspoken level of remuneration for staff in various countries. You can learn about it from various sources. For example, ask those who already have such experience.

Now about who and when.

There is absolutely no need to give tips to all employees who meet on your way. Let's start from the moment of arrival. All guests are usually met at the entrance by porters. Thank the person who helped carry your luggage to the check-in desk or to your room.

The waiters who serve you in the restaurant also deserve attention. They can also be tipped in the amount of the standard amount for this country, or up to 5-7 percent of the amount of your order. It will be better if you can make sure that you are served by the same waiter every time. In this case, he will remember you and will try to serve you better.

In most countries, it is customary to tip the maids who tidy up your room. Their value is also fixed for each country or hotel. It is better to leave money on the dressing table or bed. And don't be surprised if you don't have a regular cleaning and linen change schedule after that. It often depends on the internal rules established at the hotel or on the conditions of stay, so these nuances need to be clarified at the booking stage.

Among other things, it may happen that someone else from the hotel staff will provide you with the necessary service. This may be a message about important correspondence or a call, sending documents, or something else. In this case, this person also deserves a tip.

It may also happen that you will not be able to thank one or another employee immediately after the service provided. In this case, try to recognize and remember him by name. After that, you can give him a tip through the registration service, for example, by putting money in an envelope and specifying the employee's name and position on it. It would not be superfluous to attach a small note with a few words of gratitude to the money.

Is it necessary to leave a tip? It is important to understand that tipping is a way to express gratitude for good service. If you are not satisfied with something or a particular service, in your opinion, was not provided at the proper level, then you may not give a reward.
